At least the driver could have stopped. A down the street neighbor I did not know hit one of my cats. She stopped, came to the door and profusely apologized. I thanked her for letting me know, and knowing it was instantaneous. She was so embarrassed she avoided me for a year.
Deepest sympathies to Lorraine and family. Happened to us too. We live on a country road, on a curve. We don’t have a fence. The road had a thin layer of ice, and I guess the car couldn’t stop. My husband wants a new dog, and I told him NO, not without a fence because dogs are very agile about dodging them or slipping their leash/collar (This dog’s name was Blitzen, the German word for Lightning – you can possibly guess why). I have never forgotten what it felt like to pick her up from the road. Not doing that again if I can help it.
I feel your loss, Lorraine, even though this is probably very old. I had to say goodbye to my sweet Moxie (pictured) on 4/29. She was over 14 and just couldn’t get around any more and wasn’t eating. It was so hard.

I never let my dog off the leash outside of the yard people drive through my sub like Nascar.

The only time I ever hit a dog I wasn’t sure it was a dog
A furry flash, a bump, and something dog sized running off in my rear view mirror
It was gone down a side street and out of sight before I could even turn the car around
Can’t imagine it wasn’t hurt, but it could still run mighty fast

I remember when this ran the first time. It is still so sad.
