We came home from a 3+ week away and our cat was nearly dead. Yes, we had a daily sitter. Sly (Sylvester) died a week later. On past trips when we had other cats as well, they behaved like the comic cat did — where were you and feed me.
I reeeeally want to say this isn’t true, but Shuri, my “work cat” gets fed by either the kids dad, or the youngest who is three. She will sit on my lap for hours at a time sharing nap time cuddles, but abandon me post haste for either of the two of them.
The family lives on quite a bit of property and she will follow us on hikes through the woods, once I did an experiment and sent 3 down a separate trail to see who she would follow. She paused briefly, perhaps confused, then RAN after him leaving me to fend for myself.

Penny would throw up for every day I was gone. Of course, he waited until I returned.

We all have our priorities. Living on Vancouver Island means the pack gets its unfair share of fresh salmon during the year. But we get our lox.

So, when your cat licks you, is it A) expressing affection; B) cleaning you; or C) tasting you for when the revolution begins?

Still love her though!

If they had opposable thumbs kitties wouldn’t need us at all. :)
