    In a Hallmark store last December, they were, not surprisingly, playing Christmas songs. As I was getting to the checkout, Joni Mitchell’s River was playing. I said to the clerk “how is one of the saddest songs of the ’70s a Christmas song?” She seemed nonplussed.

    There’s a couple of accounts on FB that post about this – going back to the original 40’s+ versions of some. Richard Thompson plays popular songs in their throwback musical signatures(? something like). Check out his version of Oops I did it again.
