I’ll bet the whole idea of “making ice” and “ice on demand” sounded weird.

My aunt moved from Texas to Boston for her husband’s job back in the fifties. She was nearly there when they stopped for lunch, and she ordered iced tea. It flummoxed the waitress, and she finally had to order hot tea and a glass of ice. The whole restaurant stood around watching her make it.

My dad was drinking iced coffee in the seventies. It’s not a new thing.

I like iced tea in the summer, but have never cared for iced coffee. Now I cannot have any kind of coffee, though I did like it hot.

I think I remember seeing a reference to iced coffee in one of the 1950s family sitcoms, thought it odd then too.

I first heard of iced coffee back in the 70’s too. My husband has drank black coffee for probably 40 years, but now he starts sweating much easier, than he did when he was younger. I keep telling him he ought to switch to iced coffee, maybe he wouldn’t be as hot (and miserable).

My brother-in-law had a similar story about iced tea in NYC. Had to order a glass of ice and a cup of tea.

I absolutely LOVE that explanation: It is good because it happened before I was born when people were good and wise.. That is exactly what I’ve been thinking without realizing it. Thank you, Greg. I would say you must have happened before I was born because you seem to be good and wise, but that would make you pretty old.

I had the same hot coffee/cup of ice experience in Virginia in the early 90’s. The Dunkin’ Donuts ladies stared at me as I put my iced coffee together, as though I was from another planet. I STILL get the same questioning looks when I order my brewed iced tea with milk, not lemon. But hey, that’s how I like my hot tea, so why not?

I remember early 80’s advertisements from Lipton about making Sun Tea: throwing tea bags and water into a glass jar and leaving it in the sun for a couple of hours. We always had a gallon jar of it in the fridge.

How we yearn to flip back the calander to the old days. However I was born in 1994 so don’t have a whole lot of experience about the olden days!xxx

Here’s a paraphrase of Douglas Adams’ concept: “Anything invented before I was born is good and right and part of the natural order of the universe. Anything invented before I’m twenty is cool and sexy and I can probably get a career out of it. Anything invented after I’m thirty five is wrong, and should be stopped.”

Introduced to iced coffee in Vietnam. Made with French Press, sweet condensed milk and raw sugar over big chunks of ice in a 16oz glass.

I never heard of iced coffee until the International Delight brand of it came along, with coupons for it. Just bought and drank Twinings of London brand iced tea for the first time this week; for decades, all the Twinings of London tea I ever noticed, bought and drank was hot tea.

My wife is a big fan of iced coffee. Hates the hot stuff. Been drinking it as long as I’ve known her. My guess is she’s the approximate age of the old guy character in this strip. Every so often he acts like he just crawled out from under a rock.

My parents and I enjoyed glasses of iced coffee on our back porch on hot afternoons in Daytona Beach, FL…in the 1930’s and ’40’s! Yum. I still drink it. Living alone now, when I make a pot of coffee, it lasts a couple of days, so I drink it cold then with a lot of flavored creamer and ice. Yum, again.

How will we ever know if Dad is getting combative with Alzheimer’s if this is his permanent pattern?

My dad was drinking it in the fifties. It’s been a staple at Dunkin Donuts for decades. It must be a New England thing!
