Put the stinking dog outside
I took a wad of Golden Retriever fur to the carpet store, and wandered around until I found a perfect match.

Not a good idea. I have a dog with mixed brown, gray, and black fur and a similar rug. If you’re not careful, you’ll trip over the invisible dog.
I prefer hardwood or ceramic tile but in the rooms with carpeting, it has to match the cat food.
Sheltie fur rarely stayed down on the floor for long. It hovered in the air, in tufts. We tried to match our carpet to the color of reused, chewed grass.
