For a few years after I graduated I was dunned by my alma mater. Then I wrote a letter telling them that I was no more likely to give them a donation than I would to VW for selling me my first car. Furthermore, if they dropped me from their mailing list, the savings in postage over the years would constitute a tidy donation. I got back a huffy letter basically saying [imagine an indignant voice] “How could a college graduate write such a letter?!” (Easily, and with good spelling and grammar!) What ivory-tower naivete! But they never asked me for money again.
My alma mater in the States, Davidson College, has never asked me for a penny, although they still send me the Davidson Journal, so they know my address. Of course, they also know I work at Kellogg College, so maybe they don’t want money that’s been sullied by another school…?
Once I graduated from college, I would get requests for donations. I felt that since they did not help me get any jobs after graduation (I did all of their job search seminars and interviews) they were not entitled to any of my hard earned money. Also, I had to pay for my tuition, etc… with no help from them, so I did not feel obliged.
The college I went to also keeps asking me for money. I never send them any. I only went there for one year. They really did not add enough to my knowledge for me to pay them extra. They already had my tuition as well as the room and board.
I feel no obligation to send money to my Alma Mater. My father helped me get through college and I am grateful for that. I DO send money to my Alma Mater to help those whose parents can’t provide the opportunity that I got. I am paying forward my father’s kindness.
Mine has figured out I’m not gonna donate. They did a stupid a few years back that made the news, and showed me they’d misuse my money if I gave them any.

When I graduated, outside the graduation venue, they had tables set up asking grads for donation. I stared, laughed and returned to work.

I sent Cornell a check for “One million times the assistance I received”. 1,000,000 × 0 = $0. Never got another solicitation.

Cause you’re still paying off your student loans.
