When I was designing phones for a PBX, the worst case scenario depicted (whether true or not) was, “A fat woman in Minnesota in the middle of winter can build up to 30,000 volts of static.” I think it had to do with very dry air and a more even layer of adipose tissue. We had to design for that eventuality to keep from frying the IC’s inside the phones.
