Actually the full expression is “happy as a clam at high tide”, because people harvest them at low tide.
Someone once asked me how the world was treating me, and I responded with “Like a baby treats its diapers.” It was entertaining to hear them fall off their chair laughing on the phone. :-)
I asked the clam how he was doing, but she didn’t say anything. Totally clammed up.
What a country where even clams can be happy!!!!
The last calm I saw was in a chowder.
Bewitched: I’m as happy as a clam! As TWO clams!
Bothered: I’m as happy as a whole bucket of oysters!
Bemildred: I allus thought oysters was kinda sad…

Didn’t express itself much, swimming in the white sauce and butter.
Was this a bearded clam? On second thought, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know what that is.
The last time I tried to talk to one, he flexed his mussels, and clammed up on me.
