There is an entire book that has been written on this, and other, fatal syndromes at the Grand Canyon: “Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon”. It’s actually somewhat scholarly and academic, and covers everything from snakebites to unprepared hikers (tackling the Bright Angel Trail just before a snowstorm, or taking ONLY one water canteen!) to lightning strikes to murdered prospectors to people who choose to go to the Canyon to commit suicide, but, yes, the most popular chapter is the idiots who go past the railings and fall.Oddly (or maybe not), it’s among the best-selling books at the GC book/gift stores.
