Because that wasn’t what dr. King, republican, was about. He was about freedom of the individual to become whatever he could instead of begging for handouts from the govmnt. Dr. King would be ashamed of todays generation.
That’s true. MLK, as a Southern Liberal, would have been a Republican. In Dixie it was the Democratic party that was the conservative one. Curious to think that this business of identifying parties by their ideological purity is only a generation old but we have already come to accept it as normal, so normal, in fact, that we try to impose our current state of affairs on history.Personally, I think it’s an unfortunate development since it allows both parties to incorporate unrealistic and extremist views into their platforms, making compromise almost impossible.
@HelynaMLK’s work was protesting government wrongdoing, Jim Crow laws. OWS doesn’t know it, but it’s really doing the same thing. The reason you feel like opportunity is slipping away is the result of the very solutions you want. Government tried to guarantee home ownership to everyone regardless of whether they could afford it through the Community Reinvestment Act, and ten years later it caused the financial meltdown that has crippled the economy for everyone. The only guaranteed outcome government can offer is bad times for everyone. Wise up, and beware of creeping authoritarianism.
Oh please, not the same thing. The civil rights movement was focused on a just cause. the OWS crowd has no focus and tens of causes that some are OK , but nothing like civil rights.

If MLK had been there, maybe the Occupy protests would have accomplished something.
