The phone booth just shook his head, and let a tear roll gently down his neglected buttons.

The few surviving mailboxes are in terrible condition, too. Another notch in DeJoy’s gun.

USPS Collection Boxes used to be in a number of colours over the years. Apparently they were changed from red-over-blue to just blue in the sixties. The official line is that the change was on the advice of a design firm and to make them easier to paint. https://images.app.goo.gl/Wab94EKwV6LALNie7

My vague memory of the time (unconfirmed by a brief web search) is that anti-Vietnam-war activists discovered that spray-paint-stenciling a yellow star in the middle turned the box into the flag for the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam (the Viet Cong). https://www.fotw.info/flags/vn-vcong.html In fact, I do remember seeing some boxes with that star.

Was that the reason for the change? Only the unofficial history of the USPS knows for sure, and I doubt that it will ever be made public, if it even exists.
