My late father told me when he was growing up that his little brother hated eating vegetables so he would drop them on the ground so the dog would eat it.

Growing up, I had a problem with only one vegetable. Only because, inevitably, a half of an hour after removing it from my plate in the proscribed manner, I would be kneeling in front of the toilet divesting myself of my entire meal—it happened every time. Finally, my parents told me that I didn’t have to eat that vegetable…………asparagus ! ! !

Broccoli gets mixed ratings with kids. I was hosting a family of three, a mother and two boys, at my house. I remember I served cooked broccoli with butter. But, the older boy turned up his nose at those green tufts of florets. The younger boy, always looking for adventure, dug in and loved them, as did his mother. Eventually the older kid decided to give them a try, but it was too late, as they were all gone.

I actually like broccoli…when it’s cut up into small pieces…and swimming in beer cheese bacon bits soup!
