Maria Doyle portrayed Katherine on Tudors.Back when she was young & in The Committments I’d have given her a rose garden. Some guy named Kennedy beat me to it.
The “Tudors” on TV just wanted to play up the sex- so they decided to show him as a young man. I don’t take pay channels, but saw the first couple of episode online. I considered the show tedious and over-sexed!! And the costumes were very poorly designed and not authentic- I study Medieval issues, as you can see in my photo where I am dressed as my 13th Century personna.
For those who don’t get the reference, it’s (in order) Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, and Katharine Howard (aka 3, 4, and 5) that are being discussed here.
Henry loved Jane, but she died young. He annulled his arranged marriage to Anne of Cleves when he realized how ugly she was but didn’t disposess her. Then there’s Katharine….
Yes, Pab, the wives of Henry really are interesting… My favorite Medieval stories involve Eleanor of Aquitaine. My SCA personna is an English lady at the court of Frederick II in Italy, daughter of a goldsmith (because I also do metal arts) who supervises the care of the many parrots in the Emperor’s collection. (Naturally- as it is SCA, I am a pretend character). My avatar shows me in costume as Beatrice Fayrewether of the Aviary (I formerly used “of York” where most of my ancesters are derived). I do a great deal of reading in my studies, and purchase the books (many used) so that I can loan them to others.
vldazzle: Odd that you should mention Eleanor of Aquitaine. The community theater group (am-dram for my British fans) that I’m on the board of is producing “The Lion In Winter” this fall, and if I live that long I’ll most likely be directing it. Eleanor is one of my favorite women in history, not to mention characters in drama.
And the play they’re producing after that? A little lark called “Bearding the Lyons” by some joker named Pab.
And for the rest of you on here, yes I know that Henry was a fan of Capital Pun-ishment, but knock it off. This ain’t Callahan’s Place.
Lion in Winter was a great movie and I’d love to see your version. What is the gist of Bearding the Lyons? Is it a take-off on the other, or “something completly different” (a la Pythons)? And yes, Eleanor was a remarkable woman. I have read Amy Kelly’s and I also admire Christine de Pisan who wrote about the City of Women (not Fellini’s version, which was more fun) but women of real value;-) I enjoy your strip and your comments.
Coyoty: Anne of Cleves (aka the Flanders Mare, as Henry is supposed to have referred to her) stayed in England the rest of her life; Henry gave her some income and estates (bribe for agreeing to the divorce?). She was also known as the “King’s Good Sister,” and took precedence over all ladies except for any later Queen and I believe the King’s daughters. It’s said she was quite happy to stay, once she knew she would keep her head…her brother’s court was rather dull. She was apparently rather fond of the young Elizabeth and on good terms with Mary.
Dawnsfire, I prefer an earlier time as long as I choose the place;-) Emperor Frederick (13th C) had it all- great foods and fabrics, his marvelous menagerie. He even chose to live most of the time in southern Italy, even though he was German. And, like the Romans, he had indoor plumbing-unlike most of the Brits in that era.

Is that the Stupor Mundi Frederick or another one?
Actually, I enjoy English history from 1066 to 1603, but the Tudors were what led me into it.
