24 - was a joke after the “second” hour. Writing worthy of a soap.
@homonylo - while I can’t totally disagree w/you: America’s shakey psycho-sexual mindset has its roots in Puritanism. Sure GB forced them out but they started there. BTW despite our collective immaturity, we still kicked your bleeep 1776-1783. Cheers…
Actually, pschearer, although you’re right about World War II, I’m not sure we were as important in WWI. As I’m sure you know, we were pretty isolationist at that time and, because we had such a large German-American population at the time, we were not inclined to fight against Germany. In fact, there was a large faction in the US that would have preferred to have us side with Germany in that war.
jukeofurl might have a more important point – Great Britain exported their puritan nuts to this continent.
Were one a Brit, and having the Revolution, WWI, and WWII rubbed in one’s face, one would make three points:
1) Whose capital got burned to the ground in the “War of 1812?” Hint: it wasn’t London. Matter of fact, none of that war was fought on British home turf, and…
2) Yes, dearies, thank you oh so much for speeding up the inevitable of WWII, but the fact remains that Hitler was not the brilliant generalisimo he thought he was, opening up a second front with the U.S.S.R. being case-in-point, but…
3) What have you done for Rule Britannia, lately? One means, besides drag down our economy with your ponzi schemes, bad accounting, and shady lending practices, and involve us in your ex-president’s personal vendetta against Saddam.
Not that we are ungrateful, mind you, for protecting us from the ravages of potential Soviet expansion all these years, but one must also temper one’s nostalgia for those times with the bitter memory of being for all those years a) essentially an occupied territory, despite being counted among the “victors,” b) having an arsenal of weapons stationed on our soil, every bit as dangerous for us as it would be for its intended targets, and c) having said weaponry on our soil becoming, ourselves, targets for Soviet nuclear aggression.
Never the less, despite these little shortcomings, we remain very much your truest and most devoted allies.
“And saved your bleeep in 1916-1918 and 1941-1945. ”
Oh, you mean the 1914-18 war and the 1939-45 war! Still, they do say that, in order to make up for being late for two world wars, the USA has been putting a lot of effort into starting the next one… (joke)
How can Mexico be? The U.S. is more likely to accidentally deport a legal Mexican-American citizen than it is to even question an undocumented British immigrant.
And it’s not so much importing “incompetence” from Europe to the U.S., it’s just that the U.S. has this blind adoration of laissez faire economics, believing somehow that deregulation is the key to everything, and that the almighty market will somehow make things right in the long run.
How did the Free Market prevent the present oil spill? It didn’t. How will the Free Market clean it up? It won’t, but those pesky regulations (like they have in Europe) keep getting in the way of free-marketers making a buck, even at the expense of others’ livelihoods, indeed, their lives. For freedom, baby, Drill, baby, drill!
Oh, and good luck finding a follow-up to “Lost” and “24.” One might consider getting off one’s bum and getting a life.
24 - another show I never watched. Criminal minds was supposedly the season finale this Wednesday, but it’s “to be continued”. There is a show on 6/2 which may be the actual end of the season. This is a crime show that I like ;-)
I watched most of the first season of 24, and part of the second season.
The next time I tuned in, Jack had just been literally tortured to death. The bad guys brought him back to life and within minutes he was chasing someone across rooftops. He stopped mid-ladder to have a heart attack before running the guy down.
No, Vi. You have to wait for next season to see the end of the story.
British guest stars (Tim Curry) make it so hard to get a complete story done in one week with all the soliloquies and asides. It’s like they take the theater seriously or something.
I can’t believe it. Jack is bloodied & now a fugitive on the run. At least we have a big screen 24 to look forward to. Now I have to pay $$$ to watch a TV show in the theaters
Wait: In Plain Sight, The Closer, the last 3 episodes of Breaking Bad this year, Burn Notice, Dexter, Eureka. Mad Men. I’m going to be okay. I’m going to be okay.
@ghostkeeper: TA so very much for holding off the Axis for so long! There, I said it, and I mean it..My Dad was a WWll and Korea vet, may he rest in peace. Some Americans are greatful to the British, even though we were not so at one time.

When did this get to be Jingoism 101?
At least we imported your oil company’s incompetence. It could be ruining the Channel.
