Sadly, you are absolutely correct. The Charlottesville police allowed the situation to erupt into violence.
Instead of keeping demonstrators on the sidewalks, cops allowed non-permitted Antifa and BLM crowds to surround the park. When the fascists and other creeps tried to reach the park (where they had a permit to assemble) police made no effort to create a safe corridor.
Instead, they stood by idly while the opposing groups started to mix it up. Once the violence got a good head of steam, the Chief declared the permitted gathering in the park to be “unlawful” and his police pushed the remaining Nazis out into the middle of the brawl.
Every person is responsible for their own actions, but city officials deliberately created the perfect stage for a violent confrontation.
