Calamity Jane: Back in my day, little children were told to look it up in the dictionary to help them remember it better – and we only had bound paper dictionaries. Close, gopher gofer, but not quite! .Precocial are fully formed; birds have down (in the case of kildeer, even patterned the same as adult feathers); sight and hearing are functional; capable of keeping up with the herd; etc. Altricial have eyes closed; deaf; no feathers of any type; incapable of coordinated movement; poor body heat regulation; and such. Humans are altricial.

A vegetarian friend told me about watching an eagle sitting on top of a power pole, methodically ripping apart and eating dinner. She wasn’t sure what was dinner, but there was fur flying everywhere.

No wonder she is annoyed: He failed to buy some sheep dip for the snacks.
