Here in Depoe Bay we have a small summer population of Grey Whales.
They stop here, instead of continuing north, and feed on Mysid Shrimp and Crab Larva. The advantage of stopping here being that they get to start putting the weight back on sooner. Also, there are plenty of little coves that mom can leave her calf while she goes hunting for biomass.
I had one boat captain tell me that one of the moms will actually herd her calf to the smaller whale-watcers and leave it there to go feed a bit.
