Oh so true. Even as recently as the 1950s and 1960s, newspapers (remember them?) devoted enough physical space to comic strips that they could be filled with gorgeous art by draftsmen such as Alex Raymond, Stan Drake, Alex Kotzky, etc. If those old strips were reproduced in the same size as current day strips, the panels would be so crowded with detail that they would look just like an ink smudge.
