I grew up in Dixie in the sixties, and never heard the phrase “sweet tea” until I was an adult. Sweetened iced tea was always assumed. You could specify unsweetened, or hot tea; otherwise, you just asked for tea – in my neck of the woods in rural Mississippi, anyway.
