Not too sure how about living in a place (usually for seniors) where you don’t have some place safe to lock up your possessions, can’t cook your own food, have to eat whatever they give you, must participate in what activities the director insists on, one public area (living room?), no place to have a private TV night, and for those who have the potential of lost minds… can never leave.
Yah… “OPEN UP!” and let me back in! I had freedom on my own!
Gated communities and those retired living places take a certain mindset to accept and love. It’s cheaper and quicker to just hold the vacuum hose to your head.
Gated communities also often have HOAs.(home owners association) So with that you are limiting your freedoms with inane rules and regulations while paying dues. So to me it seems in the comic the old guy is preferring prison as he has more freedoms. That’s my take on it. :)

He’s been in there for 50 years. Some things change in that time.

I live in New Jersey. I don’t know what it is to be a free man.

I guess to him, prison is better than entering the Pearly Gates.
