Tomorrow might be the 147th anniversary of the Headless Horseman becoming the Headless Horseman. It was on October 28th 1776 that a Hessian trooper got his head blown off at The Battle of White Plains. Washington Irving states in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” that some residents believed the Headless Horseman to have had his head blown off at some Revolutionary War battle. Later on, at the party at the Van Tassel Mansion, residents give their accounts of their role in Revolutionary War battles. Two local battles are mentioned including The Battle of White Plains. The residents of Sleepy Hollow all exaggerate their roles in the battles.
As I’ve mentioned before, I live in Chester in northwest England. Washington Irving lived in Liverpool for three years and in Birmingham for seven years. It was in Birmingham that he wrote his stories “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. He often visited Chester during his time in Liverpool and Birmingham. He visited a pub called The Headless Woman in Duddon near Chester. He mentions seeing a maypole in Chester in one of his writings. Also, Sleepy Hollow is in Westchester County, New York.
