The way they were drawn in the comics it looked like paint. That’s always been a challenge for live action depictions. The old TV Superman and Batman didn’t quite match the comics, with their middle aged physiques in fabric that had real wrinkles. By the 80’s we started to get the molded body suits- and we’re finally losing the circus strongman look with the briefs in a different color from the tights.

We had a guy built like Roy show up at work one evening in a spandex Spiderman outfit. It was a sad night for us all.
