Ummm, being a student and teacher of literature, I do know Pastis did not invent them! This was just a (weak) attempt at poking fun at his own self-deprecation over his punning!
Nachikethass… Sorry. I didn’t call you out by name, cos I figured you were joking….it’s just that somebody, mentions Pastis almost every time there’s a good pun in a comic, and often when there’s one in a comment forum. If it weren’t you, it would be the next person. And then others will applaud or second the comment.
As a person who’s been making horrid puns since before Pastis was_born…._ (sigh) …(but who would never claim to be as talented…)
…. and a fan of stupid puns anyplace she can find them, I’ve seen people post, and have been asked, myself, so many variations of “Did Pastis really write this?” and “Did you/he learn from Pastis?” that if I were a cartoonist, I’d feel put down…as though everyone thinks I didn’t know how to write a good pun till I studied “Pearls Before Swine.”
It’s like writing great poetry all your life…but starting about 2010, being asked, every time, in jest, whether you were channeling a maybe newer, and yes, possibly better, poet…or even whether he actually wrote it for you. After a while it would grow… um… I’d think unfunny.
Pastis’ art is not so much the pun, but the follow-up in the last panel— which usually tops the pun that went before. Two opinions— people should avoid the temptation to pun and pun again. One time wit, two times half-wit. And, please stop insulting cartoonists by comparing them to someone else. Please? Thank you.

Hold on, I remember this before – in a “You May Be A Geek If…” and Kathy said no that time.
