I learned back in the ancient days of the typewriter, so I always put 2 spaces after a period. Then a few years ago I submitted a series of stories to a “Lois and Clark” fanfic site (because it was fun, that’s why!) and was informed by the editors that I should never put two spaces after a period. So I retrained myself.

OK, this is news to me (about the 2 spaces after a period.) I learned typography (with actual metal type) in the 60s. The idea at that time was that the period provided extra optical space anyway, so a second space is not needed. And anyway, if something is being set in type with justified left and right margins, you use the space between words judiciously so that the entire line looks well spaced. The Linotype machine did that for you automatically, with expanding space bars between the words, but it lost the ability to judge by eye where the space should be. Today’s Word software does approximately the same thing, but more sophisticated publishing programs offer more spacing options. But there still wouldn’t be any need for extra space after a period, because there is still extra optical space

There seems to be a bit of controversy about the two spaces after a period. See this article:

This would come across a bit differently if they removed the speech balloons.
