When Jim Thorpe won gold in the decathlon at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, King Gustav of Sweden announced to Thorpe, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world!”. Thorpe’s two word reply:
“Thanks, king.”
You can read elsewhere about his medals being taken away later (most would say unfairly) and being posthumously restored.
