I’ve never understood it at golf and tennis matches. Other sport’s athletes routinely make magnificent, precision plays amid deafening noise. Still, that is their culture and what they’re used to, so any deviation feels wrong. If they started encouraging cheering, chanting, and the like at kid’s tennis and golf events, then carried that change up with those kids as they grew up, eventually the pros wouldn’t bat an eye lash.
