I think a chainsaw is the modern equivalent, especially in Texas.

He needs a combine. The scathe is not a weapon or a symbol for killing; it’s a reaping tool. He gathers (harvests) the souls.

How about a subpoena?

I got a chainsaw blade for my weed wacker.

But scythes are cool and scary! Why else would you be called the Grim REAPER? You don’t hear Ruby Rose complaining about her scythe!

The Grim Reaper has too many appointments. He’s monitored by supervisor who gets irate when the quota is missed.
