I have a friend named ישי, pronounced Yishai (that’s yeesh-eye). (For those not in the know, that’s the name of Jesse, father of King David, in the Bible). He was furious when he read something online which alleged that the proper pronunciation of his name was “Isay”.
I was once told that my legal name could not possibly be my legal name – it MUST be a shortened version of another name. Um, I think I – along with my German mother – know best, guy!
It’s called dialect. Pronuniciations vary even within a single country. Even a first year linguistic student should know that. So we know what kind of person is correcting her.
