When I was in what was then called Junior High School, there were “[Hard] Rocks” who fancied leather jackets with turned-up collars and “duck-tail” haircuts and “pegged” pantaloons. I was afraid of them, though I don’t in fact remember any of them doing me wrong. They probably didn’t know I existed. In retrospect, they were a vain bunch, as preoccupied with personal appearance and carriage as a Louis XIV courtier.
Curiously, I don’t remember such types in High School, not as such; there were some overweeningly macho types, jocks mostly, vaguely intimidating but, once again, they probably didn’t know I existed. And there weren’t that many of them in “college” algebra and 4th year Latin.
