Take the “bad” (like a busy job) with the “good” (like a dog on speed lick.)

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,The courage to change the things I can,And wisdom to know the difference.”

The Serenity Prayer is the common name for an originally untitled prayer by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr1 (1892–1971). It has been adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve-step programs. (from Wikipedia, note all the usual Wikipedia caveats…)

    Gracias,

    Glenn

Bravo, Gavin, bravo. Dogs are angels with paws. And we’d all do well to give good gratitude for what IS going right. (Like, she has a warm car to drive, and good shoes to wear.) And, she has a loving, adoring hound to jubuliantly greet her as a Goddess arrived! Been there, dogs rock ! : -)

Gotta love a dog. Tess isn’t that energetic (she’s 14 after all) but she still lets me know she’s happy to be with me.

I have heard two good stories about dogs. One was by a lady who loved Chihuahuas. She misses all those she has owned and believes that they all become stars in Heaven to shine down upon us.The other is an American Indian saying. The Great Spirit created all things for man to enjoy and use with respect and love. The Great Spirit however did not create the dog.The Great Spirit already had one. The dog was there at the beginning so the dog would be to the end.If I could time travel that would be the thing to see when man and dog first meet to form that relationship we have with no other animal on earth.I love the horse but it will go wild if left alone. The dog will die on your grave.Even some humans would not do that.

We got a Black Lab from a pound, AKC papers & everything. We figured out much later that she was a cruelty case, as she was afraid of brushes (must’ve been beaten with one). She taught me to not be afraid of dogs. She was sweet, gentle, & after I had moved out & gotten a cat, let the cat ride her into the kitchen when I visited. She thought cats were family. I can pet a pit bull without fear thanks to Pax. I miss her.

Why would I mind. I had to wipe the tears several times just to type it.The short time they are with us makes it none the less hurt when they go. Then slowly you see a pup. It licks your hand and dang it here we go again but I would not miss the ride for anything. And that I hold for anything that you love and loves you back that much.(Okay Cats included………I needed a laugh)

To love and be loved will always be the greatest gift in life. While a pet is nice (and Cuddles was very special to me for 23 years) nothing is better than a true relation with another human who shares all your thoughts and dreams.

The old canine lovin’ SargeWish I could say I will be owned by dogs for the next forty years, but I don’t know how you keep going through the painful loss. My sweet12 year old “little black bear” dog is soon to be gone and I doubt I will ever be able to face this process again. Wish I had your outlook and fortitude. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you. My brain knows what you are saying and agrees, it’s just the heart that is not on board. Hopefully one day…

The old Sarge,Amen about our dogs not living long enough. I think we’ve done a pretty good job of keeping Elsea healthy until now. Unfortunately there is nothing left to do. I’ve never had to have a dog euthanized before and I suppose that is why it is so difficult. I also pray there is a “Rainbow Bridge” or something similar where we meet again. I know she would want me to adopt again. I wonder how you are able to open your heart again knowing it is for such a short time. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Your insight has given much to think about. Folks who love their dogs are the most special people.

No, not a bum out. We know we have to do this, but like you, it is one of the hardest things ever. Elsea is uncomfortable and frustrated and it is the right thing to do. We are fortunate to have a veterinary hospice in our area and they will come to your house for the procedure. Making the appointment is where we are struggling. Tomorrow or Fri. will be the day. Just need to work up the courage. I am going to keep coming back and reading your comments to give me strength. Thanks again for sharing. I can’t express how much this has helped. Sometimes just to know others have been as upset/torn apart and still faced it provides some comfort.

I don’t get why she is cursing at the rain. She’s heading towards her car and she is headed home. She should be standing at an unsheltered bus stop.
