So they’ve been in Peru for weeks (remember, Rosa said she had to leave 2 weeks after graduation, and absolutely no later, thereby rushing Gunther into a decision to accompany her rather than going to Moony) but they’re just now meeting her uncle’s executive secretary? That should have happened on day one, whether her uncle is in the country or not. The timing (and so much else) of this story arc makes suspension of disbelief a huge effort. It would almost be more credible if they learn that they have really been abducted by aliens, and they’re on the planet Znargh. This whole story is just plain bad.

I think Rosa’s problem is that she is too idealistic. Her idealism got in the way of rationalization. She didn’t do a through check of exactly what she and Gunther (whom I don’t think she expected to accompany her) were going to do and Where. I can only see disaster between her and Gunther… ;)

Well, this explains why Rosa’s parents weren’t too concerned about letting her go to work for her uncle! I think Oramouse hit the nail on the head – Rosa’s plans were based on her romaniticized notions about what kind of “clinic” her uncle was running. Having made a few bad assumptions like that myself, I can relate….

Rosa’s dilemma is made perfectly clear in panel 2. She knew her uncle was a great doctor/surgeon, but she romanticized that his clinic was in the outback and catered to The Poor. This is the internship of Service she expected. She didn’t bother to check the facts! This is working out well for Gunther, who is not the rugged outdoors-type. And, if things go smoothly enough with Sophia and her uncle (will we ever get to see him?), Rosa will, I think, adjust to her new reality….

And just what did Gunther expect to be doing at the clinic in rural Peru? For that matter, now that he knows it’s a well-funded establishment in downtown Lima, what does he still expect he could do there? Maybe when Dr. Big-shot surgeon returns from the conference in Madrid, he will tell Gunther, “You’re Rosa’s boyfriend the tailor, right? After seeing the current styles in Europe, I’ve been thinking I need some new suits. Can you make me something in a Mohair pin-stripe for the next meeting in Paris?”

@ ReallyBad2 stated…. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++“So far, Rosa doesn’t know:-Where her uncle’s clinic is located-What he does at the clinic-What she’d be doing at the clinic-Basically Rosa threw her college plans away for an idea she literally knew nothing about other than “I have an uncle and he has a clinic” and she made up the rest of the story from there.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++This sums it up really well in my opinion. I am rather disappointed in the character of Rosa at the moment. And this is also seemingly a silly waste of time and money for Gunther as well. To have Rosa (let alone Gunther) take this route with what APPEARS to be absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE or UNDERSTANDING on Rosa’s part… and an equally foolish devil-may-care attitude on Guther’s part…. makes me feel annoyed at BOTH of them.

I see several scenarios – 1. her uncle is looking out for them and doesn’t want them in danger. 2. her parents only agreed to this trip if the uncle did that. 3. the uncle is a scam artist of sorts. He gets donations for the poor, but only send a few donations to them and rest goes into his clinic. If this was a close knit family, why didn’t Rosa (and her parents) know all of this?

When Rosa talked with her uncle to get invited on this trip, she didn’t even ask where his clinic is and what she would do there? Apparently the only thing they discussed was that she had to be there in two weeks after graduation, which obviously she didn’t, since she and Gunther have been playing tourist while her uncle is in Spain. Will any of this be explained, or will it all remain a mystery?

-* regardless of who liked it*-It’s not that I like this, it’s that I recognize it as within the realm of the possible for idealistic young folks like Rosa. -I’m in my mid 60’s, but unlike most of the ole fogey posters here, I do remember those ‘I can save the world’ days right after high school (when so many of my classmates were drafted and sent to Vietnam, and returned in body bags).-Maybe what helps to make Rosa’s actions credible to me is what my middle niece and oldest nephew are doing now. Both actually finished their undergrad and earned a degree (mostly on scholarship and work study, but still have debts). Neither could find a job in the US that paid enough to both pay on their loans and pay for rent.-So both are teaching ‘English as a second language’ in foreign countries (nephew in Thailand, niece in Japan).-Both did do some research first, into the programs that they applied to participate in, and the places they would be posted. And both were totally shocked at what they ended up with. -My nephew found himself in a beautiful but remote village, teaching English to adults who want to work for a Thai company that is opening plants in the US (he was told he would be teaching the children of diplomats.) Fortunately, he is nowhere near all the demonstrations and police reaction to same that is happening where he was actually told he would be located, but he is with a bunch of long time vets of this program who have a very sour attitude and frequently take ‘vacations’, leaving him to handle all the work.-My niece ended up not at one school, but having to travel between several. Fortunately, the children seem genuinely happy that she’s there to work with them and eager to learn, but she spends so much time commuting, she has no time left for lesson prep.-But so far both are still excited about the possibilities of ‘making a difference in the world’.

Wanna bet Rosa becomes so disillusioned that she decides to go back home and starts at Yale instead. She is not going to get her adventure and start “living.” And it is her own fault – she thought his uncle is a poor doctor working for a downtrodden clinic for the people of poverty, that his uncle has a good heart for the poor. No, he simply sends supplies but does not attend to them. Her parents’s fault also if they did not tell her exactly what his uncle is. Perhaps they did but she didn’t want to hear it. She wanted her adventure.

If her parents purposely sabotaged her trip then they’re doing a great job of getting disowned by their daughter. She’s out of high school and basically an adult, you don’t play these games with someone her age.

You do if you are confident your child can’t support them self yet… Unless Rosa has independent wealth somewhere under her direct control, she’s going to have to rely on her parents. Parents know this, and they use it to control their children even after they become “legal” adults. And after that, (and if they’re rich enough), they use “Estate/Inheritance” control, well into their adult lives.

Rosa is willing to live in unfavorable conditions doing volunteer work. if she wanted a fancy lifestyle I’d agree, but it seems money is not her aim. She’d be in the Peace Corps right now if she could and that wouldn’t take any help from her parents.

Actually, it would. The reason she can’t be in the Peace Corps is that you need a at least some post-secondary degree to be in the Peace Corps, and she (presumably) can’t get that without financial help from her parents. She said so, herself.

The premise of Green Acres was a lot more plausible than this. The lawyer knew he was buying a farmhouse in a rural community when he did it. We may think that an unlikely decision on his part, but it could certainly happen. This story requires a Yale-bound student to throw away her future education by going to Peru on 2 weeks’ notice, after talking with her uncle but not being told where she would work or what she would do. The nature of that phone conversation between Rosa and her uncle is beyond any even remotely plausible explanation.

She’d be in the Peace Corps right now if she could

“IF SHE COULD”. Yes, I’m aware of all of this….

Not the point of my response…. It was when you said:

AND THAT WOULDN’T TAKE ANY HELP FROM HER PARENTS..

And my point was, YES, IT WOULD!

If she had enough cash to finance her own college education so she could join the Peace Corps, she’d have taken that route by now, and bypassed her parents. Since she hasn’t yet, I think it’s safe to say that she can’t without their help.

Furthermore, Rosa also wants to take the shortest, more immediate path to her desires… to be able to “do more,” than “learn more.” She must have thought her uncle was that shortest path. So that might also be why she bypassed Yale, or any college, even if she did have the cash for it, or other alternatives if she didn’t (i.e. tuition assistance from the “military, etc.”)… It is on this point where I think she might not be thinking “end game/ big picture.” Maybe it is worth sticking it out at Yale for 4 years and letting her parents pay for it, before she goes off to the Peace Corps, etc.

I agree with some previous comment: Sofia looks like Viper’s mother. And if Rosa doesn’t give Gunther a little action, Sofia will take it from him. She is a real cougar. Also just wondering, Gunther never unbuttons his top button, but neither do the other male characters. They either wear t-shirts or shirts with ties. I may be wrong on that, but its just an impression. Maybe an open collar is hard to draw.

    > plastic surgeons often do pro-Bono work on disadvantaged kids with deformities>and on adults who have been disfigured in accidents or fires. However, Sophia seemed to imply that whatever Rosa will be doing, it will be in that high-rise office HQ of the clinic. She might not even meet any patients at all.

Maybe Gunther could take a tip from Beetle Bailey and hide his eyes behind tinted designer glasses. Also, a black, mock neck t-shirt, jungle vest, and Indiana Jones hat. The kid has to butch up and give Rosa something to fire up her fantasies and make her navel tingle.

Maybe the uncle uses the Hollywood style “clinic” to earn money from celebs or the wealthy to fund outreach clinics. That building and secretary seem too glitzy. Maybe we are being setup by Evans.

I guess the real question is, why did Rosa want Gunther to come with her?
