It’s not all THAT healthful, if you’ve got diabetes. Pasta = carbs. Tell him that.

No mystery at all, Flo. Half-a-billion years of evolution have optimized males of nearly all species to be efficient delivery systems for DNA. Our evolutionary function is to compete, mate, and get out of the way (some insect species have optimized this to the point where the female devours the male during sex, turning him into useful nutrition once he’s served his purpose). Given this raw material, what’s amazing is not that we’re often self-destructive jerks, but that so many of us live as long as we do.

What is so unhealthy about a burger? Meat with a bit of fat, now declared to be okay. Cheese also okay. Veggies like lettuce, pickles, onions, tomatoes…all good. Ketchup and mustard, both good. New guidelines on bread is a couple of slices a day isn’t bad, so now even the bun is alright. Granted, the mayo probably needs to go, but that’s alright. Why do we keep getting told different dietary guidelines??? Haven’t we figured out this optimum health thing yet?

when did people start saying “healthful” instead of “healthy”?does the latter just describe people who eat stuff that’s the former now?

So you’re saying she was able to defy the laws of physics? Amazing. So I guess in order to lose weight, she should have gone on a high fat diet, right?

Or perhaps she didn’t stick to her diet and went back to her old ways.

Most people in the US are fat simply because they eat too much, no matter what it is; and it shocks me that so many people don’t even see that. If people actually controlled the portions of their food, an amazing thing would happen. They would take in fewer calories and slowly lose weight. However, most of these same people have no self control. A one pound steak with a one pound potato with butter and sour cream is perfectly ok and the minimum amount of food they need to take in for one meal! Or they won’t get enough!

“… Had a friend (f) who started to eat low-fat and “healthy”; she gained 60 lbs in a year.”~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I don’t believe I’m a conspiracy theorist. but I can’t help wondering if growth hormones (which are fed to all the animals we eat) might be passed into humans and might be causing the problem of obesity. I, myself, am not overweight (I’m 5’ 3" and weigh 104 lbs)But I notice a lot more obesity (women AND men) than I saw when I was younger. And I’ve always eaten very little meat. Just a thought…………

I lived in Maine until I was 13. After we moved, I’d hear “New England accents” on TV and think “people don’t talk like that up there.” Then I went back for a visit and yes, they DO talk like that up there. And when did “wicked” become a synonym for “very?”

I eat a very low carb diet and speedwalk at least five miles a day. I do just fine without the carbs, slow or otherwise.

But then that’s my experience. Your mileage may vary.

We need to be careful when the packaging says “low fat” because the fat is often replaced by sugar to improve flavor. That’s why some folks who go on low fat diets gain weight.

One of the differences between male homo sapiens and male homo superior: we’ll eat tasty food even if it’s good for us.
