Back last summer, didn’t Bernice say she was signing up for a quad dorm room? Are there two roommates we still haven’t met? And where have they been all this time?
I think number 2 was done by someone else, and number 3 is Upchurch’s version of Luann at 10, number 4 is from a Sunday one where Lue dreamed she was grown up, I think I saw 1 somewhere and 5 is a sketch (prework before doing final one for strip for one somewhere in the last 2 or 3 years)
think greg might be changing luanns design again i really hope it changes to the 2nd picture hopefully by 2 to 3 years time
i really would like to see changes to tony (change lips) as well as tj possiblywhen was the last time greg changed luann’s design 2005 2006 i think it was around there
anyone can get the Luann design when she “guested” in the other cartoon? where she found a dog and gave it to another teen character? and number 2 is almost “Disney like”
“. I actually know some folks who do that while they are concentrating or working, tying their shoes…” ^Michael Jordan was also famous for his tongue hanging out while in “mid-air flight”. Probably also does it now, way after retirement, when he reaches over to tie his shoes…
Maybe she should really concentrate on art in that school but I don’t want it to be with Zebo (or whatever his name was). Although he might turn into a good teacher/critic once he is past the intro to art part!
I think you’re being very kind.-It’s been many (many!) years since I was a teen, but, from what I remember, the use of sarcasm was to show that the teen was were exasperated with someone, and thought the target of the snarky remark was kind of stupid (compared to the person delivering the snark)…
"…but as her way of saying “get real”. ^That’s the way I see that one, too.
Bernice is abrupt and tends to be more “analytical”, and snappy, but her overall “criticisms” are not stemming from a negative zone, so much so as a more “pragmatic” one (though she too had a couple of brief moments of needing to “get real”). It seems to be part of the nucleus of this strip, for us to identify with (and also laugh at or sometimes shake head vigorously at) Luann’s outlook, as depicting what many go through. Some choice “get real” moments towards Luann from several people, including Bernice (+ or – snark): –
See the strips I just posted. It was part of their ongoing convo, and it was part of what Luann was bringing up, not Bernice. And she and Luann were there working out their separate situations, both being arcs going on around the same time….
Luann has unexpected skills! While drawing #2 from left is very sweet and demure, by that very fact it is not like Luann. The drawing #4 from left is “Farah Fawcett DeGroot” and not really believable, either. In fact, although not very flattering, #1 seems to be the most likely as a vision of a future Luann. Sigh.
Yeah, I figured, I didn’t mean “forgot” literally, just wanted to post that one myself, since it was one of my personal favorites, and I already had been thinking about that strip lately, in light of this upcoming month..
The one that makes me scratch my head is this maneuver by some singers, male and female:
Michael Jackson did it also.
It’s funny… Sheryl Crow once said in an interview that one of her first jobs in the “biz” was as one of Jackson’s “assistants…” Apparently, one of her duties was to keep Michael’s “soldier” always “standing at attention,” in advance of a stage/concert appearance.
I am OKAY with Bern being “REAL” but many times Luann basically was asking Bern “AM I beautiful?” and Bern basically told her “there is no hope for you” Maybe she was scared of Luann getting a big head and actually becoming Tiff, but unlikely………. Lue is just as beautiful physically as Tiff, but Tiff has more confidence on herself(sometimes more than reality) while Lue lacks it (even in the mist of being successful ),Tiff lacks quality friends while Lue has some because despite both wanting to be more than what they are, Tiff pretends she is what she wants to be and Lue wishes she was(to the points she sometimes wishes she was Tiff), Lue for being more real, gets friends who like who she is, while Tiff many times realizes that she does not have anyone of “importance” and becomes jealous of the “not important people” around her (who end up being the closest to actual friends, “HBF” Crystal, Luann, Bern, Delta, TJ, Knute, Gunther and even Ox.)
Aaron, Crystal, Bern, TJ, Gunther, and Ox have all had their moments of mutual friendship/attraction with Tiff. .She and Luann have even had a few moment of closeness. .Tiff is not hopeless.
we readers know that, but Tiff DOES NOT KNOW THAT just the same way Lue can’t see she has beauty, talent and many admirers ……..both Lue and Tiff think they don’t have the things the other has
That second skecth is my favorite. Lu looks VERY pretty in that slightly more realistic style. I was gonna say I like the fourth pic too, the one where she has longer hair, but it has too much of a ‘Tiffany’ vibe, know what I mean?
Another head scratcher is that… Twerking… dance thing…..
…
LOL, here ya go, Jay – Synchronized ‘twerking’ from Brazil…
Aw, not fair! You must remember, In South America (Brazil, Argentina, etc.) it is the “posterior” and not the “Northeast Mounties” that are the primary object of attraction/obsession among “hetero” males. They even have an annual “pageant” (a la “Miss America”) that honors that particular portion of the female anatomy.
Second from the left is from the future, when she works at a Disney theme park. Second from the right is after she gets back from a plastic surgery clinic in Lima. (Tell Sofia that Gunther sent you, to get a discount.)
"To give credit where credit is due, Luann’s “self-portraits” in today’s strip were done by: (L to R) Greg, Tom Bancroft (former Disney animator and multitalented cartoonist), Jonathan Upchurch (Greg’s grandson), Chad Frye (illustrator, storyboard artist, all around ’toonist) and Greg."
Quick! Someone check Mord’s coffee pantry… – No, wait- on second thought, that itself would be a “deathwish”…. Plus, I’m sure the Mastiffs on guard are too full for any more treats to keep them distracted….
Thanks for posting these. I’m not on GoComics anymore (I got tired of paying to have my comics here) but they can be found every Monday at www.outnumberedcomic.com

Take it as a compliment, Luann, not an insult.

…I think this is more Greg showing off his own artwork then Luann being awesome at self portraits.

Hmm…..I thought at first you were referring to Bernice- having her tongue out of her mouth before thinking about what she’s saying. Some friend.

There are actually other comic/cartoon characters who are drawn with the “tongue out” expression at times, as well, like “Curtis” and “Snuffy Smith”…
GOGOPOWERANGERS about 9 years ago
Isn’t sticking your tongue out supposed to be a writers way of showing creativity or something its a quirk used by writers i believe

Bernice gets it right, as always. With Luann it’s all about Luann. Unfortunately the one person Bernice can’t get right is herself.

If the “Disney Princess” drawing is Luann’s ideal image of herself, then it is perhaps significant that she gave herself a nose job…
