Some numbers on herd immunity taken from an article in Fortune —-“Modeling of SARS-CoV-2 indicates that an infection rate of 65% to 70% is needed to protect the rest of our freewheeling human herd. Thus, two-thirds of the U.S. population must become resistant to the virus before our epidemic shifts from collective catastrophe to isolated incidents. But allowing infection of about 200 million Americans translates to more than 1 million deaths, a morally reprehensible toll.”—— It is easy to do the math on this – just use the current counts. https://fortune.com/2020/07/27/herd-immunity-coronavirus-covid-sweden/
Trump supporters remind me to update the old proverb, and therefore: “In the land of people with a 1 IQ, the man with a 2 IQ is king.” (Note we are definitely NOT talking about one or two HUNDRED!)
I just don’t get why people are so invested in this herd immunity thing. After all, smallpox disappeared because of global immunization efforts, not everybody magically becoming immune to the disease. Does anyone know of any disease that disappeared because everybody became immune to it at once?
Excellent strip! I wish I had been asking the question directly after his herd mentality comment the other night. Why doesn’t everyone blast him on his idiotic lying responses? If only the debates could be held with him hooked up to an electric shock collar that gives him a jolt every time he tells a lie!
I’ve seen suggestions that vary between 45% and 75% for when herd immunity kicks in for this. It depends on the infection rate (R null)… which we don’t really know or understand yet, though we are getting closer. Also on sociological things of which the most important is probably the “impedance” on accessing health care: Under what circumstances do people usually (not) seek health care;
If you consider that without a vaccine, whatever number of people will have to get sick, and do the math, the cost is in the (small) millions of deaths (I did the math on this a month or so ago. Don’t remember exactly, and in any case, death rate more recently seems to be dropping, some). Death not being the only ill effect.
I’ll be waiting for a vaccine that’s already been proven highly effective.

The herd mentality of herd immunity alone explains Trump’s base perfectly.

On the clip I saw, he first called it a “turd mentality” and had to correct it to “herd.” Out of the mouth of babes.
