Once again, folks, the rioters on Jan. 6 were committing acts of sedition and treason against the U.S., trying to derail the Constitutional/legal processs for certifying a presidential election by violent means. According to a report from the Associated Press, lawyers for several of Jan. 6th Capitol rioters now facing jail time for storming the halls of Congress are asserting their clients were not part of a deadly insurrection but were working as “journalists” recording the action that day.

After having handed prosecutors a treasure trove of photos and videos of themselves taking part in the chaos of the day, participants are looking to duck responsibility with a legal strategy that appears dubious.

’It’s unlikely that any of the self-proclaimed journalists can mount a viable defense on the First Amendment’s free speech grounds, experts say," the report states. “They face long odds if video captured them acting more like rioters than impartial observers. But as the internet has broadened and blurred the definition of a journalist, some appear intent on trying.”

A member of the right-wing Oath Keepers militia pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, becoming the first among the more than 400 people facing such charges to formally admit to wrongdoing.

Jon Schaffer, 52 years old, a guitarist in the heavy-metal band Iced Earth, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of obstructing an official proceeding and remaining in a restricted building with a dangerous weapon, and agreed to cooperate in the continuing investigation into the riot. He entered the plea via videoconference before a federal judge in Washington, acknowledging that he entered the Capitol armed with bear spray and worked to stop lawmakers’ certification of President Biden’s Electoral College win over former President Donald Trump.

The first plea, 100 days after the attack, comes as some 410 members of the pro-Trump mob have been arrested across the country on charges including assaulting officers, obstructing Congress and conspiracy. Many cases remain in the early stages as prosecutors and defense lawyers spar over whether some should be imprisoned while awaiting trial, as Mr. Schaffer and several dozen others have been. Investigators have scoured through hundreds of thousands of videos and photos to identify rioters, including 200,000 digital-media tips people have submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mr. Schaffer, of Columbus, Ind., faces up to 20 years in prison based on the obstruction charge. Prosecutors estimated that the guidelines would recommend a sentence of between three and four years but said they could ask for a more lenient sentence depending on the extent of his cooperation.

William Robert Norwood III of South Carolina has been charged with obstruction of an official proceeding and theft of government property — both felonies — after boasting to his family about his participation in the deadly attack on the Capitol.

According to the Beast, “Norwood, who goes by Robbie, boasted to family members about assaulting a law enforcement officer, according to court documents. ‘It worked,’ he wrote to family members. ‘I got away with things that others were shot or arrested for.’ He went on to brag of his bounty. ‘I got a nice helmet and body armor off a cop for God’s sake and i (sic) disarmed him,’ he wrote in messages to friends and family. ‘Tell me how that works.’”

Makes you wonder where they find the time. Retired maybe? You’d think they would find something better to do other than to post their drivel across dozens of comment sections. Brings to mind the meme of the 30 year old losers living in their parents basement feverishly pounding away on a keyboard. No doubt at least a few of them are trolls paid by Russian, China or some other USA hating country wanting to sow discord.
