I missed the end of recess bell once in sixth grade. A friend and I were playing an intense game of tetherball, and after it ended, we looked up and everyone else was gone. It was the last day before Christmas vacation, so nothing too bad happened.
Ignorance is bliss… until you meet Miss Wormwood’s unapproving “late for end of recess bell” stare. BTW, I love how the panels swing along with Calvin!
Oh my gosh, this happened to me in the first grade. The teacher came out and got me and when we got back to the classroom, she spanked me over my desk. I was 5 years old. This was in 1945. I didn’t miss the school bell again.
Wouldn’t have happened with me. at Calvin’s age, I went to a parochial school totally run by nuns. Our recess was a sort of gathering (sporadic running) on an asphalt lot that also served as our parishes parking lot. There was no play equipment. Grades 1-8 had recess together. There was no K or pre-K at that time. But woe to the “big kid” who knocked over a “little kid”. That wasn’t the way we were supposed to behave. When recess was over, there was one bell. Everybody stopped for it. Then there was a second bell. And everybody lined up by grade so that we could be led back to class by our teacher. (We all had assigned seats.) It probably sounds worse now than what it was at the time.

Who cares! Have fun, Calvin!

Just enjoy it. Trust me, being 5 minutes late for class when your 6 years-old will not ruin your life.

I went to a 2 room school 1st thru 6th grade. I missed the bus a few times and my older bro had to walk me home. Only a mile or so

If I miss my guess this is the start of a very painful story arc. Buckle up people.

You probably missed the bell, Calvin. Don’t worry, Miss Wormwood will come out to collect you.

Missed the bell or ignored it?

Either way, a win for Calvin. He’ll take those little wins, one at a time!

And so begins one of the worst arcs in Calvin and Hobbes history.
If you know, you know.
wiley207 6 months ago
I dunno… we’ve seen that the bell is loud enough for Calvin to hear from the playground.

Never mind, six year olds should be allowed to swing till they get bored or till the bully knocks out the senses.
