Nope. I’ve found that with these phantom strips, you wait until the next day and then view it by clicking the left arrow next to the date. It usually shows up then.

In today’s strip, the fallen are symbolized by a pair of Army boots. When I enlisted in 1961, the Army had just switched from brown footwear to black. A few of the recruits with odd shoe sizes were issued old brown boots and a bottle of black dye. But their black-dyed boots still had brown metal eyelets, a constant reminder of the “brown-shoe Army” of the 1950’s.

Ever since then I have thought of the generations passing through the the Army in terms of their boots. I had my black boots at the height of the Cold War. Vietnam had forest-green canvas boots for the jungle. And for about twenty years now it’s been the kakhi boots of our desert wars. I picture row upon row of empty boots of varying colors, off to the horizon.

I’d say it was worth it if only we would remember that the purpose of a military is to fight and win, not to fight and fight and fight without end. Our enemy isn’t in Afghanistan, he’s in Islamabad and Tehran and Riyadh. We should let the enemy know how much he can lose in this world so the next one no longer matters to him.
