Kiesl says, "After the Anschluss, a number of musicians I know escaped Vienna and are now living in Zurich. I wasn't so fortunate. I was conscripted." Gran says, "Well, you sing for them." Kiesl says, "Because, whether I chose them or not, they are my comrades. You, however, do not sing for your comrades. You comfort your would-be conquerors." Gran says, "I wanted to tell him why, but I could not utter it. Then he abruptly changed the subject."
