Juliette says, "So did you and Lt. Kiesl ever talk about that kiss again?" Gran says, "Never… He became decorously correct, and stuck to singing. I think, in a way, it put us at our ease." Juliette says, "You didn't want to talk about it?" Gran says, "What was there to discuss? He was a man in uniform, far from home, in a war." Gran says, "Essentially, he was the same as every soldier in every camp show I had played. They all wanted to hold my hands and kiss me and feel that the world was normal, just for an instant." Gran says, "The trouble was, when we were together, I wanted to feel the world was normal too, just for an instant. ...I wanted it in the worst way."
