Arlo: I slept like a log last night!
Janis: I hardly slept a wink!
Arlo: I'm sorry!
Janis: It's OK! I'm happy for you!
Arlo: I meant, I'm sorry you didn't sleep well!
Since Jimmy graduated from high school in 1970 per Wikipedia, he must be 62 or 63. Maybe he is hankerin’ to retire and wants to wean us off this strip, so we won’t miss it so much when he’s gone.
Sorry previous commenters. Jimmy is a genius. He shows the natural human tendency to think all other persons are talking about our situation when all they usually think about is their issue. Also how hard it is to be listened too with really short sentences. Did you mean this? Is that what you really meant to say? Each person trying to interpret the other.
Many middleaged men snore. Many middleaged women have trouble moving into deep sleep. Sex may be great for the guy, but may not be as relaxing for women. Men are insensitive because they don’t notice visual cues (like Janis looking all sorts of not feeling well) and they like to announce without thinking about what it actually sounds like.
I would have been crabby, too. Give Janis a break.

She assumes that he’s apologizing for a good nights sleep rather than feeling sympathy. Odd dynamic.

He’s assuming she’s assuming that, but she could have understood and still her statement would stand correctly.

Poor Janis can’t open her eyes yet. Another cup needed, at least. Did Arlo sleep like a log, or like sawing logs?

Have I missed something over the years, or has Janis always been this sarcastic? Not liking the attitude; seems out of place for her.

While sleeping like a log, did he saw logs too noisily for his beloved to sleep?First to fall asleep gets to sleep?

I love the cartoonist, honest I do, but he’s scraping the bottom of the barrel here.

This one baffled me, but that’s no doubt why it appeared in the little-read Saturday comics…

Or maybe he’s sorry because he knows she’ll be making him sorry the rest of the day now. At least that would be slightly amusing.

Brilliant and subtle. Sorry the others don’t get it, Jimmy. (Or, perhaps, sorry that I do.)
