Arlo: Want to put on some music?
Janis: Sure!
Arlo: What would you like to hear?
Janis: How about some AC/DC?
Arlo: it's a whole nother atmosphere when the tree comes down!
“Little Christmas,” or January 6, or the Feast of the Epiphany, the day when the three wise men arrived to see Jesus. The 12 days of Christmas begins on Christmas and end on Little Christmas. At that point the tree can come down.
saw 2 trees on the curb today. back in the day most folks kept their trees and Xmas decorations up till New Years. of course most people didn’t have their trees and lights up a few days after Thanksgiving. i have seen Christmas lights on a house lit up like a week after Halloween! i think it was last year in the strip where Janis only wanted a little tree and Arlo complained it looked like a centerpiece. i know a number of older folks who since they no longer have children in the house only do minimal decorating on holidays now. since A&J no longer see their kid and his family i suspect that would happen to them as they grow old and alone.
I’m waiting until New Year’s Eve to take mine down. A couple of years ago I saw a house near my son’s school keep their outside Christmas decorations up until well into spring. I’ve always wondered why. (Elderly and dependent on someone stronger to do it? Young but busy working and raising a family?)
Some people believe it’s bad luck to have the tree up on New Year’s at midnight; the thinking is that it brings the previous year’s baggage into the new one.
In the 80s, at least one church told their teens that AC/DC stands for “Anti-Christian Devil Child.” So in that case, AC/DC is the perfect reverse Christmas music.
Atheists aren’t troubled with decorating and undecorating. I planted an apple tree about a week before Thanksgiving. I’ll have pie and cider in the future, not empty chores that consume time, energy and money.
I start removing the outside decorations on Jan 2 or 3. The tree takes several days to undecorate and put away. I remove the lights last so I can still enjoy it as long as possible. Everything is put away by Jan 10 or so.
