You only get so many passes before you have to pay and the longer you pass the more it costs to play the game of life.

Hubby says I’m an accident looking for a place to happen. On average, it’s a broken bone every other year. Four months ago was a snapped femur—almost healed and owner of a titanium rod and screws. Did it standing up—everyone says that takes a special talent. Thankyouverymuch :-)

All those risky things he did (the snowball has stones in it) where he did not get hurt, and he injures himself taking out the rubbish.

I came home to the frozen wasteland of MN a few years ago after three weeks of working in ThaiIand, went out to fill the birdfeeder, and zoooop—bamm, can still slide the chips around in my elbow.

Been there. Done that, Arlo. Just like 1000Lakes. Doc at the ER said I won the hematoma award from that ice event.

From his position I’d say he has a coccyx crisis.

What I take from this is the transformation of our natural bent to ignore risks and our resilience to the consequences in our youths, to our anticipation of the worst and less ability to “shake it off” as we age. Age typically forces naivete and fearlessness to give way to experience and a bit more caution.

Once you hit your late 50’s + you don’t bounce like you used to. In 2017 I fell off a stepladder (4’) & broke my spine! When I was a kid I fell out of the big trees behind my Mom’s house & lord knows how many other things & the biggest fear of all was DID I TEAR MY CLOTHES!!! Cuz my Mom would tell Dad & I’d get the lecture of how expensive clothes were & I had to go around town with mended/patched duds. Didn’t tear my clothes when I fell off the stepladder & I even walked around for 1 1/2 hrs & then I was a hurting unit & got hubby to drive me to the hospital where I ONLY had to wait 4/ 1/2 hrs to see the r

I have managed to break my own nose by punching myself in the face trying to pull flower pots apart. And my big toe is messed up because I tore something when I tripped and came down en pointe and rolled forward on it. Mostly I just have scars from tripping over things and a numb thumb tip from cutting the end of it off while trying to chop a potato.

Did a heels up flop on the stairs carrying my second daughter’s suitcase to her car. Literally knocked me for a loop. My brother said it reminded him of a case where the guy sheered the top of his skull off. I actually felt lucky; things usually could be worse.

Husband spent the months of October and November in terrible pain in left shoulder and arm. After a 8.5 hour trip to the emergency room (and normally we don’t even go to the doctor unless we are REALLY SICK) that told us he did not have a heart attack we had to deal with the pain and a trip to our doctor.

I was being terribly sympathetic and nice – he had trouble driving as shoulder belt sat on the pain and he has motion sickness so I could not drive. I would belt him into the car (as he could not even reach for it) and tried making a variety of small pillows to protect his shoulder and schlepped every chair in the house into the kitchen for him to see if it was comfortable (including the large living room chairs) and finally ended up assembling a chair we bought at Ikea for him.

One day he was complaining about how I don’t know what being pain is like. I lost it and I stared him in the eye and said “Should we go in body order or chronologically? Left ankle – ripped in high school – still hurts as you know, virus in left leg (I remember it being in my knee, mom says my thigh) missed most of third grade, right knee – fell on it twice with full fat person body weight, ripped the skin off it when I fell in Washington DC and did complain or not do anything the entire following 2 weeks, still cannot sleep on that side for more than an hour. Two bouts of bursitis in my left shoulder and had to sleep sitting up in a chair. I won’t count the collar bone I broke when I was 3 as, apparently as the story goes, I said it did not hurt.” So yeah, I know what pain is."

Funny, as with Arlo, after a certain age one doesn’t jump up right away to see if anyone saw you tumble.
