That one is too obscure for me. I presume the ground’s some US proverbial thing about death?

I never wore white after Labor Day for years. However, I got some white skirts and sweaters that were winter clothes and hence I was wearing white.

it’s only white shoes that you shouldn’t wear after labor day. any thing else white is ok. me, i wouldn’t be caught dead in white shoes before or after.

Here in Florida, you can wear white all year without getting the stink eye.. (But usually we somewhat follow the seasons). And as a former New Yorker, I still wear a lot of BLACK. LOL!

It’s a good thing that doesn’t apply to hair or I’d be scorned half the year.

The cultural milieu within which I was raised had no interest in this. And I’m afraid it stuck with me.

Apparently Janis now wears adult Depends which probably messed up a lot of comic fantasists.

JJ, you have to start putting some Spanx* on Janis and make ‘em white or gray if she is going to wear white slacks.

the clothing item…not the other kind.

White clothes were considered summer vacation attire by people who wanted other people to think they had more money than sense. It became popular when “proper English” was established pre-world war one. Neither had anything to do with reality.

A few years back the Red Sox had a promo with players and coaches giving fashion tips. One of them was; Never wear white after Labor Day… unless it’s a home game.

The fashion statement was based upon what the wealthy women were able to do in the 19th century. Women’s attire was quite heavy with camisoles, corsets, large hats and gloves. White afforded some relief from the sun. Only the well to do could afford to keep the white clothing clean. In fact, premium hotels used to wash their coinage in deference to women’s de rigueur white gloves. And for many other reasons beyond the reasoning of our modern world.

Finally, once the practicality of the dress code became common, class envy set in. Fashion magazines were popular even then. What were the rich and famous wearing this season?

I honestly don’t know anyone who has either been ticketed or arrested for wearing white at any time. Not even shunned. Times have changed. Wear white if you want and be fearless. Why else do we have something called “winter white?” I have a white winter parka! I do not ever wear it in the summer.

This reminded me of a 1994 John Waters dark comedy, “Serial Mom” starring Kathleen Turner as a Beverly, a loving wife (Sam Waterson plays her husband) & mother. Ricky Lake is her daughter, Missy & Matthew Lillard is her son, Chip. Beverly’s murderous spree begins when Chip’s math teacher questions his mental health and Beverly’s parenting skills. She runs over the teacher with her car, and enjoys the thrill so much that she begins killing people for minor “crimes” such as not recycling. When she’s finally caught and tried, she can’t stop watching juror number 8, Patty Hearst, because Patty is wearing white shoes after Labor Day. You can guess what happens to Miss Hearst next.

I’ve seen folks in white boots with fur inside. These days people wear what they like. Life is too short to worry about what someone else thinks.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a color that makes you feel good . I have heard that some gangs in some cities take offense to certain colors and it will be a cause for a fight , or worse . Too much time on their hands I think .
