Francis Scott Key: was named by Jackson as the U.S. district attorney for the nation’s capital, where he prosecuted race and slavery laws to the fullest extent, even to the death penalty. He also aggressively prosecuted early abolitionists, who had founded the anti-slavery movement in 1833.
Well, I’m impressed! JJ has the phase of the Moon exactly right! That’s rare among cartoonists. But…you only see the ( -the waning crescent-phase in the early morning hours before sunrise. In the early evening hours, when it’s visible (which it isn’t right now), the waxing crescent Moon looks like ) . So I’m guessing this is Arlo’s breakfast cup of coffee, right? And the panel before the last is showing the Sun coming up this morning. — That’s your Astronomy 101 class for today, students!
The waning crescent moon rises after 3 AM and sets after 3 PM. It ought to be higher in the sky in the near-dawn panel than it is in the late-night panel.
I’ve got my flag out. I like to use my 48 star flag for all the appropriate holidays to honor WWI veterans (both of my grandfathers) and WWII vets (my father and father-in-law [also Korea for my father-in-law]). All passed now, but certainly remembered. Not dismissing Alaska and Hawaii – I love ’em both!
P.S. I count 36 stars on Arlo’s flag but obviously some are hidden where the flag wraps around the pole.
Celebrating the 4th with a 5th. They don’t call it that anymore, but my guess is most of you here get it. Will the metric system ever really take hold in the US?

It appears to me that we are losing a little bit of freedom every year.

The quiet shows respect to me for our freedom. Explosives do not.

The land of the free, the home of the brave. It is because of the brave that we live in the land of the free.

Arlo’s father had the 1000 yard stare. The stare that veterans, who saw combat, from WWII (or any war for that matter) had.
That is one of the things to remember when celebrating July 4th.
Freedom isn’t free.
