My dudes get the best of the best here raw peanuts in the shell along with roasted peanuts shelled black oiler sunflower seeds top brand wild bird mix .
A simple platform feeder with a 6" PVC pipe around the post. No squirrels in my feeder for years, although they get the seeds the birds scatter on the ground.
We had one of those squirrel flinger feeders. The kind that turns in circles when they grab on. It was very entertaining! Only problem was battery life.
I have two large male turkeys hanging in my backyard regularly. I don’t know for sure what they eat, but I don’t feed them. They are ugly and very fun to watch, but sometimes I get hungry watching them.
Cayenne pepper mixed with the bird seed will keep the tree rats away – they don’t like it and the birds can’t taste it. A friend used to feed the tree rats until they got into his attic and chewed on the electric wires – caused a fire and abour $100K in damage – he doesn’t feed them any more…
I put a great bird feeder in the yard when we bought our home. My neighbor Bill said,“The squirrels will have fun with that thing.” I did not really pay attention. One afternoon I glanced out the kitchen window. I saw two squirrels enjoying the seeds andnot a bird around. Later I saw Bill. He said, “Hi neighbor, I see you’re still feeding thesquirrels.” We became good friends! Sadly, at 91 he passed having caught Covid.
One year we found a bird nest in our garage. We left it alone until it had been abandoned for the season (didn’t see activity for a while and peeked inside). It was a common bird but I forget the unfamiliar name – a junco or something. The next year another nest appeared, and the third year. Then the adult bird flew into our house and the cats noticed. It took some cat herding and door opening to get the bird out, and no nests since then. Kinda sad.
I have a feeder table on a 6’ post. The table is 3 foot square. The birds love it and the hawks love it. The birds leave when the squirrels show up and it is open season. Quite a few have fallen prey. The squirrels don’t come around when the hawks are about and the hawks pretty much leave the birds alone. Saw a falcon take a dove one day but that was rare. There is a pair of owls that stand watch at night and drink from the bird bath. I can check the action from my security camera back there.
I had to stop feeding the birds. The sparrows would pick out the sunflower seeds and everything else would fall to the patio floor. It took a few weeks but eventually the pigeons were clued in, and at times there were a dozen or more sitting on the phone wires waiting for the other birds to start distributing dinner.
Fill the Feeder.Sit on the Front Porch with either a cup of coffee or iced teaAnd a Single Shot, Hand Cocking, Red Rider BB Gun.Only makes the Squirrel Jump when hit & runs off to come back another day.Remove Feeder to shed after birds have been at it for a while.Repeat procedure next day.
ine did too chipmunks and blue jays that is until the price of raw peanuts went from twenty dollars per twenty pounds to forty-nine dollars. Now they all get generic bird seed and scraps.

My wife feeds critters, whatever shows up
She watches them, takes pictures, and shares them with a couple of groups online
One of our cats spends a lot of time watching too, never seen him take a picture and I’m pretty sure he’s never posted anything

I have a bigger bird/squirrel feeder than Arlo. It’s my yard. It’s all natural with the added bonus of not having to schlep bird seed from the store.

I have two walnut trees close to my house. The squirrels are busy planting seeds that will eventually be a lot more.

We do not feed the squirrels. There are thousands of acorns and pine cones in the yard, and the season is just starting.

Too many squirrels ’round here, woods on all sides. Cats are too old to catch them, but they try!

Bears raid bird feeders in my neighborhood. They’re pretty mellow, but I would not recommend Arlo trying to scare one that way.

Just get the food the squirrels don’t like and then do like we do, and feed the squirrels elsewhere in the yard.
