Like Arlo I’ve always been an early riser, hours before my wife. Now some women get up with their hard working husbands and make them a good breakfast. Others help themselves to some of his breakfast as they stumble by, but I love her anyway.
I have a simple rule. When I have energy, I work, work, work! On my bad days, it’s “Good Morning, gimmee coffee, see ya later…maybe”. Family is used to it, and they pick up the slack, bless their hearts!
I’m the early riser and I try to be quiet when I get up but my wife always stirs a bit when I give her a kiss on the cheek before I leave the bedroom. The other day I was up later than usual and was sleeping in the next morning. About an half hour after my normal wake up time my wife reached over, caressed my shoulder and asked if I was alright. It’s nice to know there’s someone who watches out for you. Even if it was because she didn’t get her morning kiss when expected.
My internal clock bounces around these days. My cat helps me get started but left alone, some days I will pop up and others I roll over. If I remember to set the coffee timer set the smell does the trick.
Retirement allows me to sleep late if I want as does my other half. However, the dog has her schedule. Usually a face resting on the edge of the bed looking at me so it’s an every other day thing. We take turns getting up at 7 to cater to her. The only thing that changes her schedule is DST.
She wakes most days by 05:00; this is largely because She goes to bed about 20:00 (and thinks I should, too).
I spent my youth in the live music business, and even 40 years after giving up and 30 years of alarms set for before 05:00, I still regard a sunrise as something best enjoyed at the end of the day, and am discombobulated by being abed before 00:00.
Yes, mixed marriages can work! (41 years next month.)
My brain thinks it is perfectly OK to wake me between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. every morning, regardless of what time I go to bed. Fortunately I had a great boss and I was allowed to begin work at 5:30 in the morning instead of 8:00 a.m. and put in 8 hours. The only issue I ever had with getting to work that early was when I noticed (infrequently, thank goodness) the times the gravity was turned up extra high around my bed in the morning!

I turn off the alarm and let my husband sleep. If there is not an appointment—that is.

One of the reasons I avoid hospitals: they awaken you to ask if you are asleep.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy, but only if she has an appointment, I’m not stupid!

There is a tone to the recent post-moving plotline strips that i can’t put my finger on. A timeless rut or something

When I was a kid, being told to go to bed or take a nap was something to be avoided if possible. Nowadays, I hope I can get a nap or turn in early.

Sherlock Holmes doesn’t have to worry about Janis replacing him.

I never wake anyone up unless they have to go to work or school. If they did die in their sleep, I will find out eventually.

All too frequently, I see medical advice suggesting “Consider getting more sleep.” They never say how I’m supposed to accomplish that.
