Personally, I think they should raise the regulation height of the basket. When basketball was invented in 1891, the average man was much shorter; a man 6 feet would be considered tall, so a 10 foot basket was a good challenge. Even in 1947, the average NBA player was just 6’2".
With player height today averaging 6’ 7" and adding a formidable armlength, many players can stand flatfooted and almost touch the 10 foot rim. Thus it is not unusual to see players leap up to the basket and hang on the rim.
Slam dunks, to me, are not as impressive as shooting from the three-point line and hitting nothing but net.
