The term potato bug can refer to two different insect.
One is the Colorado potato beetle, which is quite harmless to people, but not to potato crops.
The other is the Jerusalem cricket, which is found in the southwestern United States and on the Pacific coast from British Columbia to parts of Mexico. It can inflict a painful, though nonvenomous, bite.
