Wait! We all have to suspend disbelief to accept that, since ants & termites are NOT related, these are imaginary wood-eating ants. They can’t be carpenter ants since carpenter ants merely clear the wood away when they’re making a nest; they DON’T EAT the wood and chewing through a peg leg is not nesting by any stretch of the imagination. The only alternate theory is that they’re termites masquerading as ants. If so, why?
My uncle lost his leg in WWII. He was only 18. Had been a Marine less than a year. He volunteered (only son, so was exempt from the draft). He was a fireman for 51! years-all with a wooden leg!! He disliked the newer artificial legs, so when he died in his 80s that was still what he had. My mom told me stories about the younger cousins stealing his leg and throwing it out the window! I wasn’t raised around the family, so I only met him a few times, but each one of those was filled with laughter.

You would’ve thought that the chomping sound would’ve engendered some attention.
