    Chanukah is not a high holy day; no one gets off work for it no matter how Jewish. Not in Israel either. It’s a very minor holiday that’s been enhanced because of it’s proximity to Christmas; to give Jews something to celebrate in a Christian world. Just like Christians placed Jesus’s birthday near the solstice to allow pagans to continue their celebrations in a Christianizing world.
